Frequently Asked Questions

Printed below are the answers to frequently asked questions about the University of Delaware's Commitment to Delaware Educators. If you have a question that is not answered below, please contact Gail Rys at (302) 831-1165 or send e-mail to gailrys@udel.edu.

Who Is Eligible for Summer 2009 UD Tuition Waivers?

As defined by the Delaware Department of Education, teachers and instructional aides in the Delaware public elementary and secondary schools are exempt from tuition payment for summer session courses. If you are a full-time teacher, administrator, or para-professional in a Delaware public or charter school, then you are eligible. This includes educators who live outside of Delaware but work in a Delaware school. Also eligible are qualified part-time, substitute, and temporary teachers. See the Eligibility tab for more details.

How do I get started?

If you have previously registered for a University of Delaware regular or continuing education program, then you should be able to register for summer classes without a problem. You will need to know your previously assigned Student ID and PIN or UDelNet ID and password. You can proceed directly to the 2009 Summer Sessions registration page.

If you have never registered for a regular or continuing ed class at UD as a Continuing Education student, you must first contact Professional and Continuing Studies to set up a Quick Bio and receive a Student ID number and PIN. You may call (302) 831-7600 or (866) 820-0238 or e-mail continuing-ed@udel.edu for assistance or further information.

When can I register?

Registration for the 2009 Summer Sessions opened April 6, so you can register online at any time. You may also register in person or by mail — see the 2009 Summer Sessions registration page for details.

What education courses can I take?

See the Courses tab for a listing of courses being offered through the School of Education and the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. If you are a teacher working toward certification, check with the Delaware Department of Education for courses that meet certification requirements.

Can I take courses in other departments and still receive the tuition waiver?

The University of Delaware does not place any restrictions on the courses teachers can take except that the tuition exemption does not apply to travel study programs or to non-credit training classes conducted by the Division of Professional and Continuing Studies.  Enrollment in any particular course is contingent on meeting any restrictions that the offering department has placed on the class.

How many courses can I take?

You may register for two courses per each five-week summer session, or two courses in the seven-week summer session.

What are the fees?

Teachers must submit a Fee Payment Form with payment for all applicable fees, including a $15 general fee, a $25 registration fee, and a $25 student activity fee as part of the registration process for each session. These are the only fees if you pay them on time. There is a $55 late fee if you make any of these payments late. If you drop or add a course after the session's free drop/add period, there is a $20 late registration change fee.

How do I prove I work in a Delaware public or charter school district?

As part of the registration process, you will be asked to fill out a form about your employment; UD account services will use this form to verify your eligibility with your district or school.
