Level A Problems
A-1) Chad's teacher asks him to solve the problem 87, 476 x 999. He says "Ok, I'll just subtract _________ from 87, 476, 000!" What did Chad subtract? Think about why Chad's method works. Will it work for other multiplication problems? Make up another multiplication problem and use Chad's method of subtraction to solve it. Show your work.
A-2) Two frogs, Herman and Thurman, both start at zero and jump until they pass one hundred on a number line. Herman jumps 6 units per jump and Thurman travels 8 units per jump. List the numbers for all the points on which both frogs will touch.
A-3) Suppose
you are told your birthday present will be "your height, in a stack of quarters
(coins)!" How much money should you expect? Show how you determined
how much you should receive?
Level B Problems
B-1) Write a number in each box such that each number is the product of the two numbers beneath it. Only counting numbers greater than 1 may be used, i.e., 2, 3, 4, 5, ...
B-2) xy is a two digit number. Suppose xy - yx = 9. How much larger is the digit "x" than the digit "y"?
B-3) A 100 lb. watermelon is 99% water. The melon is sliced up and left out in the sun all day. At the end of the day the melon is 98% water. How many pounds of water evaporated during the day?
