1. There is extreme reluctance by most organizations to describe their mental tests as measuring "intelligence" or g. That is certainly the case with both the U.S. Department of Education and the Educational Testing Service (ETS), respectively the funders and creators of the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS).
a. Why do you suppose there is such reluctance? Please explain.
b. What is the logic for nonetheless arguing that the NALS probably is a reasonably good test of g? Please spell it out, drawing from evidence in the reading.
2. Below are sample items from each of the five NALS complexity levels for all three scales.
a. Describe one specific literacy task (some sort of written material, like a label, webpage, or set of instructions) that patients may have to perform. (Bring a sample of it, if possible.)
b. To what NALS complexity level does it best compare? Please explain your reasoning. Be specific. This means referring to the elements of NALS "process complexity" (abstractness, difficulty of inferences required, number of feature matches, etc.). It also means explaining why it is not one level higher or lower.
