DE Teacher Recruitment Program

In February of 1999, the U.S. Department of Education called
for proposals for a new Title II initiative that would impact teaching
across America. Seizing on this opportunity the University of Delaware
partnered with three Delaware school districts, Capital, Christina, and
Red Clay, and submitted a grant proposal to recruit and prepare a diverse
cadre of new teachers, committed to teaching in high-need schools in the
state of Delaware. In August of 1999, the University was awarded
a Teacher Recruitment Grant and thus began the Delaware Teacher Recruitment
Program (DETRP). The program initiated a campus-wide recruitment
of preservice teachers and enrolled 18 students in the inaugral class of
1999-2000.
