Responsibilities of University Supervisors

The university supervisor or center coordinator will visit and observe the student teacher several times throughout the semester. The supervisor or center coordinator will evaluate the student's performance with the student and the cooperating teacher. Between scheduled or unscheduled visits, the student teacher may contact the university supervisor at any time to discuss concerns and problems. The supervisor or center coordinator will work very closely with the student teacher so that the student teaching experience is a satisfying and rewarding experience, personally and professionally. If the student teacher is unable to reach the university supervisor or center coordinator, contact the Office of Clinical Studies (OCS).

Student teachers and cooperating teachers can expect the university supervisors and center coordinators to:

  • wear the official University of Delaware teacher education ID badge as a form of identification upon entering the building.
  • provide quality orientation experiences for the student teacher and the cooperating teacher.
  • provide training or refreshing in the use of the student teaching evaluation instrument.
  • provide student teachers and cooperating teachers with a suggested weekly
sequence which approximates how the average student teacher should progress through the experience. While each student teacher should be allowed to progress at his/her own rate, the weekly sequence is a suggested plan for involving the student teacher in activities during the student teaching experience. As such, the suggested sequence serves as a guide, with decisions being made based upon discussion and the best judgment of the cooperating teacher, the student teacher, and the university supervisor.
  • conduct a weekly seminar for all student teachers assigned to them. A convenient location should be arranged for these seminars. Seminar topics must include classroom management, grouping, instructional strategies, student problems, etc. Building principals and cooperating teachers should be invited to participate in selected seminars.
  • observe and conference with the student teacher regularly to insure the student teacher's satisfactory progress.
  • effectively collaborate with the cooperating teacher in the evaluation process.
  • provide written feedback to the student teacher following each observation.
  • be available to cooperating personnel to assist and advise them concerning problems involving students in the clinical setting.
  • act as a counselor and confidante to students.
  • provide multi-faceted experiences during the student teaching semester to enhance and promote the transition from student teacher to classroom teacher.
  • schedule a THREE-WAY CONFERENCE (involving the student teacher, cooperating teacher and supervisor) at the mid-point to evaluate the student teacher's progress to that stage of the experience. (Supervisors, use the final evaluation report form (page 93) and/or the 3-Way Discussion Notes form (page 88) to give feedback to the student teacher at the three way conference.)
The three-way conference is a procedure to be used for the purpose of letting the student teacher know where s/he stands at the mid-point of the experience and to establish a plan for guiding the efforts of the student teacher for the remainder of the experience. While it is not necessary to submit a grade for the student teacher at the mid-point, if a student is not making satisfactory progress, s/he must be told that s/he is not passing the course at this time. This must be documented in writing. An improvement plan must then be developed by the supervisor and cooperating teacher to establish specific procedures, skills, and schedules that the student must meet in order to complete the course with a passing grade. (See suggested Improvement Plan Form page 89.)
  • conduct additional THREE-WAY CONFERENCES as the need arises.
  • conduct a THREE-WAY CONFERENCE at the conclusion of the student teaching experience. Share completed copies of the cooperating teacher's and the university supervisor's final evaluation report with the student teacher at this time. If the completed report is not in final typed condition, a near final draft will be
sufficient. However, the report must be complete to the degree that the student teacher will not be surprised when s/he reads the final version. The cooperating teacher and the university supervisor should meet prior to this conference to discuss the final evaluation.
  • submit the final typed evaluation report to the OCS no later than one week after the close of the student teaching semester. All reports should be sent directly to the OCS. Supervisors should not forward student teaching reports to MBNA Career Services. Reports will be sent to MBNA Career Services by the OCS upon written request of the student teacher.
