Domain A - Criteria Expectations

As a Scholar, Problem Solver, and Partner, Organizes Content Knowledge for Student Learning Based on State Standards.

A1: Becomes familiar with relevant aspects of students' background knowledge and experiences.

1. Observe students and take notes on each student, considering unique characteristics.
2. Talk to students, cooperating teachers, parents, specialists, and support personnel.
3. Study cumulative files, portfolios, IEP's student journals.
4. Administer interest surveys, pretests, and diagnostic tests.
5. Research how students develop and learn
6. Gain information about the communities that are represented in the class(es).
7. Know procedures for gaining familiarity with the students' backgrounds and experiences..

A2: Writes clear learning goals and objectives that are appropriate for the students.

1. Express goals as to what the teacher wants the students to learn (not what the teacher wants the students to do).
2. Develop differentiated objectives to meet the needs of individual students or groups.
3. Align goals with the state standards.
4. Present objectives in terms of observable lesson outcomes.

A3: Demonstrates an understanding of the connections between the content that was learned previously, the current content, and the content that remains to be learned in the future.

1. Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter and current research.
2. Explain how the content of the lesson is related to what preceded it and how it is related to what will follow.
3. Be able to explain where the current lesson fits within the scope of the discipline as a whole.
4. Demonstrate the ability to integrate content across the curriculum.

A4: Creates or selects appropriate teaching methods, learning activities, and instructional materials or other resources that are appropriate for the students and that are aligned with the goals of the lesson.

1. Design activities that foster student involvement and enhance the learning experience.
2. Align methods, activities, materials, and resources with each other and with the goals of the lesson.
3. Recognize the diverse needs of students and meet those needs through varied methods, activities an materials.
4. Include problem solving and/or collaborative strategies.

A5: Creates or selects evaluation strategies that are appropriate for the students and that are aligned with the goals of the lesson.

1. Create or selects evaluation strategies that provide the teacher with useful information about the extent to which the instructional goals have been met.
2. Choose strategies which provide students with clear opportunities to demonstrate their learning.
3. Use a variety of strategies to evaluate student learning.
4. Plan future instruction based upon the results of the evaluations.
