General Information

It is hoped that this will be a good semester for you and your student teacher. Please be mindful of the following:

Textbook

The Student Teaching Guidelines is the official textbook for student teaching. A copy of the Student Teaching Guidelines should be purchased by each student teacher. Please see that your cooperating teachers have a copy of the handbook. Items included in the text should prove helpful tot he student teacher, the cooperating teacher, and the university supervisor. Please collect the handbooks at the end of the each semester to redistribute to your new cooperating teachers.

Orientation Sessions

Supervisors should hold an orientation session with cooperating teachers very early in the semester. The purpose of these meetings should be to inform cooperating teachers about the program and what is expected of them, the student teacher, and the university supervisor. A similar orientation session should be held with the student teachers. The Student Teaching Guidelines provides an excellent source of information for such meetings.

Visitations

Supervisors must get out to visit student teachers frequently. A visit once a week is encouraged. Anything less than seven visits for semester student teachers, five visitations for 9-week student teachers and four visitations for 7-week student teachers is unsatisfactory.

Problem Situations

Inform the Director of Clinical Studies immediately in the case of problem situations. Most problems can be worked out to everyone's satisfaction if the Director is notified early on. This procedure is for the benefit of the student and for your protection.

Travel Reimbursement

The office of Clinical Studies (OCS) will reimburse supervisors for mileage (at the University rate) for the purpose of supervising student teachers. The OCS cannot pay fees for rental cars that are rented by supervisors. The OCS also does not give approval for students to drive university cars.

Reimbursement for travel should be requested on the regular University of Delaware business expense report form. The form should indicate that the request is being made for travel for the supervision of student teachers. Be sure to indicate your mileage to and from the various destinations and include all receipts for which you are requesting reimbursement. Sign the form in the space marked "requester" and forward the completed form to the OCS. Do not have your department chair sign the form.

It is preferable that mileage reimbursement requests be submitted monthly. All requests for reimbursements must be submitted to the OCS by May 30.
