Outstanding Science Teacher Educator of the Year & Innovation in Teaching Science Teachers Awards
—The Association for Science Teacher Educators (ASTE) has recognized Professor Kate Scantlebury, Professor & Secondary Science Education Coordinator at the University of Delaware, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry for her efforts in science education, with their Outstanding Science Teacher Educator of the Year Award, which recognizes the individual achievements and contributions of persons beyond the first ten years of their academic career in science teacher education.
The Association for Science Teacher Educators (ASTE) also has recognized Professor Scantlebury, along with collaborator Dr. Sonya Sonya Martin (from Drexel University) for a paper entitled, “More Than a Conversation: Using Cogenerative Dialogues in the Professional Development of High School Chemistry Teachers,” that they presented at the ASTE 2007 annual international conference, for the ASTE Award IV: Innovation in Teaching Science Teachers. This award seeks to encourage the development and dissemination of new designs for courses and curricula, new instructional methods or approaches, and other types of innovations in the pre- or in-service education of teachers of science. UD Alum is Delaware's Teacher of the Year
—Courtney Farina Fox, a first-grade teacher in Brandywine School District's Gifted and Talented Program at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, said she loves those “Aha” moments when everything falls into place while interacting with her students. Fox, a UD alumna, experienced a memorable “Aha” moment of her own when Lt. Gov. John C. Carney Jr. announced she was selected as Delaware's 44th Teacher of the Year at an October ceremony in Dover before 400 invited guests, including educators, administrators, legislators and others.
Fox graduated from UD in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education, is a National Board Certified Teacher in early childhood education and also has received gifted and talented teaching certification. She said about her alma mater, “UD holds a special place in my heart. I strongly believe it is the foundation I received in the University of Delaware's early childhood department that has made me the teacher I am today.” Read more..

UD-Head Start Grant Partnership Receives a $3.6 Million Grant
—Some 210 children and their teachers in northern Delaware will be the beneficiaries of a $3.6 million Opening Doors to Literacy project funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered through a partnership between the Delaware Center for Teacher Education at UD in cooperation with colleagues from the University's Department of Individual and Family Studies and New Castle County Head Start Inc., UD President Patrick Harker announced at a news conference today. —University of Delaware graduate programs remain among the nation's elite, according to new rankings published in the U.S. News & World Report newsstand book “America's Best Graduate Schools.”

Disabilities Studies and Cooperative Extension Dedicate New Facilities
—More than 100 guests turned out on Monday, March 19, for the open house and dedication of the new home of the Center for Disabilities Studies and University of Delaware Cooperative Extension, located at 461 Wyoming Road, Newark.
Timothy K. Barnekov, dean of the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy (CHEP), said that the University is proud to have the Center for Disabilities Studies as one of 13 units within CHEP.
“The Center for Disabilities Studies supports some very important projects in the community, including working on all kinds of programs and projects that support the people of Delaware,” Barnekov said. “The Total Life Program helps young people with making the transition from school to independent living. This benefits the community but also brings a lot of knowledge and experience back to UD, and is very much a part of the educational mission at UD.”
Michael Gamel-McCormick, director of the Center for Disabilities Studies, said the new facility has increased the center's ability to partner with community agencies and that the number of meetings held in the new location has increased fourfold. Read more on UDaily...

Student Multimedia Design Center opens in Morris Library—Under a distinctive crown of bright blue lighting, UD's new state-of-the-art Student Multimedia Design Center, located on the lower level of Morris Library, opened on Tuesday, Feb. 27, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and remarks by UD administrators and library officials.
The Student Multimedia Design Center will help to meet the needs of students whose classes may involve the creation of multimedia presentations as a course requirement. The multimedia facilities at the new center also will serve to enhance student presentation skills. Read more on UDaily...
Internet2's leading-edge network adds DELEARN—The DELEARN statewide education network has become an Internet2 Sponsored Education Group Participant (SEGP), providing students, faculty and researchers access to one of the most advanced networks in the world, it was announced Feb. 21 by Internet2, the University of Delaware and the Delaware Department of Technology and Information.
DELEARN brings together the state's universities, colleges, schools, libraries and other education and culturally oriented institutions to share information and technology. It is the 38th state education network to participate in the program.
The connection to Internet2 will provide Delaware's public school students with more sophisticated technologies like videoconferencing for live language, and also cultural and other educational interactions with students all over the world.
