$2 Million NSF Grant to Support Research on Math Teacher Preparation
Dawn Berk, assistant professor in the School of Education, is leading a group of University of Delaware researchers who will be evaluating the University's mathematics teacher preparation programs over the next five years, thanks to a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation's REESE (Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering) program. DCTE Receives $3.6 million Early Reading First Grant
The Delaware Center for Teacher Education will receive more than $3.6 million in an Early Reading First grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help train teachers at three early-learning centers with high populations of low-income children. Unlocking Doors to Enhanced Language and Literacy, lead by Martha Buell and Myae Han from the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, and Carol Vukelich from the Delaware Center for Teacher Education, is a partnership between the Delaware Center for Teacher Education and three community-based child care centers (Early Learning Center, Hilltop Lutheran Neighborhood Center, and St. Michael's School and Nursery). The project aims to achieve excellence in (1) language- and literacy-richness of the classroom; (2) the knowledge the teachers and assistants possess about language and literacy development and instruction through the provision of a powerful professional development program with group sessions followed with classroom coaching to support the application of the newly-acquired knowledge; (3) teacher implementation of a standards and scientifically-based language and literacy program, delivered through explicit instruction methods, with additional supports provided to children not making adequate progress through the classroom intervention; and (4) child achievements in language expression and comprehension, and emergent literacy. Katherine A. Beauchat, Katrin L. Blamey, Sharon Walpole describes the professional development tool, Innovation Configuration (IC), they developed. The IC allows teachers to identify essential literacy and language components appropriate for a specific book, plan how to target these areas before, during, and after their shared reading, and then reflect on their practice.
Graduate Scholarship Program
The Resident Professional and Continuing Studies Graduate Scholarship Program is offered from UD to Delaware residents who enroll in a graduate course through Professional and Continuing Studies and who pay tuition for a graduate course(s) in the 2009-10 academic year. The amount of the Resident Graduate Scholarship will be directly applied to the student's billing account at the time registration takes place. Obama to Honor UD Professor and 2 UD Grads for Teaching and Mentoring
Patricia DeLeon, professor of biological sciences and member of the Board of Trustees at the University of Delaware, and two graduates, Jo Anne Deshon and Karen Fredricks, will be honored by President Barack Obama for excellence in science, math and engineering teaching and mentoring. Jo Anne Deshon earned a master's degree in education in 1980 and a doctorate in education from UD in 2000. Karen Fredricks earned a degree in elementary education from UD in 1975. Read more....

Excellence in Teaching and Advising Awards
Of this year's recipients of the University's Excellence in Teaching and Advising Awards, two are closely involved with teacher education. Deborah Bieler, Assistant Professor in English, received an Excellence in Advising Award for her work as a mentor to new teachers of English. Graduate student, Jacquelyn Seaborg received the graduate student Excellence in Teaching Award for her work with music education majors. Read more....
Enthusiastic Students Enjoy the 9th Annual Festival of Words
On Saturday, March 14, the University of Delaware's Willard Hall Education Building was filled with bright-eyed, enthusiastic students from local schools spending one of their precious weekend days attending the ninth annual Festival of Words event. Award-winning young adult author Robert Lipsyte was the keynote speaker. Peggy Dillner, director of UD's Education Resource Center, has co-chaired the event, along with Bonnie Albertson, since the festival's inception nine years ago. Groups contributing to the festival included the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust, the Delaware Center for Teacher Education, the Delaware Teacher Center, the Delaware Reading/Writing Project, the Education Resource Center and the University of Delaware Writing Center. High School Students Interested in Teaching Careers Visit UD
Sixty-two students from Seaford High School in Delaware and Parkway Center City High School in Philadelphia attended a special campus visitation on Friday, March 6, designed to showcase the opportunities available at the University of Delaware for students who choose to pursue a career in math or science teaching. The campus visit was made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This $1.4 million grant known as Project SMART was awarded to Kathryn Scantlebury, professor of chemistry and biochemistry and coordinator of UD's secondary science education program, and Carol Vukelich, L. Sandra and Bruce L. Hammonds Professor of Education and director of the Delaware Center for Teacher Education. Read more...
Kathleen Minke is President-elect of National Association of School Psychologists
Kathleen Minke, professor and acting director of the School of Education in the University of Delaware's College of Education and Public Policy, has been voted president-elect of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). Reading Project Alumni Find Success in Kindergarten
The first class of Head Start preschoolers to experience the Delaware Early Reading First (DERF) project has “graduated,” and University of Delaware researchers say their astonishing success in kindergarten clearly demonstrates the value of early language arts intervention in improving the academic outlook of children from impoverished circumstances. The project was funded by a $3.3 million U.S. Department of Education Early Reading First grant which was awarded in 2005 to UD College of Education and Public Policy faculty Martha Buell and Myae Han of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies and Carol Vukelich, director of the Delaware Center for Teacher Education and L. Sandra and Bruce L. Hammonds Professor in Teacher Education, who worked in cooperation with New Castle County Head Start. Read more...

UD Experts Meet with President Obama's Transition Team to Discuss Policies Affecting People with Disabilities
Michael Gamel-McCormick, interim dean of the College of Education and Public Policy and president of the board of directors for the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, and Steve Eidelman, co-director of the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities at the University of Delaware, met with members of President Barack Obama’s Transition Team in December. Along with representatives from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Easter Seals, and the National Association for Councils on Developmental Disabilities, they discussed policy issues affecting people with disabilities, including health care reform, special education, employment, and housing. Early Learning Center News
Romisha Robinson has been appointed as Site Coordinator for the Early Learning Center – Wilmington, located at Neighborhood House. Romisha is a former Head Start teacher, center manager, and education specialist and also served as an adjunct instructor at Delaware Technical and Community College. She teaches a Training in Early Care and Education I (TECE I) course for CDS.
Registration will begin in February for ELC’s summer camp programs. New this year is a camp with creative, hands-on activities designed especially for Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten children who will take part in weekly water play, art classes, and theme-related field trips. The program for school-aged campers will offer multiple daily activities that enhance academic skills as well as numerous recreational and educational outings. Laboratory Preschool Accepting Registrations
The University of Delaware Laboratory Preschool, which will celebrate 75 years of providing excellence in early care and education in June 2010, is accepting registration for September 2009 enrollment. The school is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and provides part-day programs for children aged two to four years as well as a full-day kindergarten program. UD Researcher Receives Grant to Implement Early Math Learning Intervention
