Statement of objectives and interests

  • This three-question essay response is part of the standard Graduate Studies application and should (a) describe why the candidate wishes to pursue an advanced academic degree in the special education field;  (b) indicate an area of interest aligned with one of the program area specializations; and (c) indicate if there are any exceptional circumstances associated with the candidate’s academic record. If the applicant plans to pursue initial special education teacher certification in addition to the degree, this should be stated.

 

Transcripts showing undergraduate cumulative index of at least 3.0

  • Applicants with lower than expected performance are not automatically disqualified, but should provide (in Question 3, Statement of Objectives & Interests) an explanation for their prior performance and describe the experiences, skills, and dispositions they believe indicate the ability to succeed at the graduate level.

 

(If applicable) Transcripts showing graduate cumulative index of at least 3.5

  • Applies to graduate level courses taken through continuing education or graduate programs at the University of Delaware and other institutions.

 

Three letters of recommendation

  • Letters should be from professors who can attest to the candidate’s suitability for graduate study and supervisors who can comment on the candidate’s professional commitment and experience.
  • Letters from family, friends, and professional peers are strongly discouraged.

 

Writing sample on an important topic in the field of special education.
  • This essay is in addition to Application to Graduate Programs and the Statement of Objectives and Interest.
  • The applicant should address one of the following topics in a brief essay of 500 words or less:

    1. Select an important problem facing individuals with disabilities or the schools, teachers, parents, or other people who work with them and propose a solution to this problem.

    2. Describe an experience in your own life that influenced your decision to work with individuals with disabilities.

  • Alternatively, the applicant may submit a brief paper that s/he submitted in a recent education course.

 

Examination Scores and Other Supporting Materials

  • Applicants who plan to pursue initial teaching certification in special education concurrent with the masters degree must submit Praxis I scores with their application for admission. Passing Praxis I, a test of basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills, is a requirement for all uncertified candidates in University of Delaware teacher education programs.
  • All applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit additional information in support of their application, such as Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, documentation of volunteer activities, or other evidence of abilities and professional commitment.
  • Applicants may be asked to meet with one or more special education faculty members to provide additional information about their professional experiences, skills, and goals.
