A new Masters Plus Certification Program in Exceptional Children and Youth is a special pathway program designed to meet the needs of individuals interested in pursuing a career as a teacher of children and youth with special needs and to address the critical shortage of special education teachers in Delaware schools. Individuals can obtain certification through this two-year, state-approved program of classes and seminars accompanied by intensive, school-based mentoring and supervision. During this program of study, candidates will be employed by public school districts or charter schools in Delaware as para-educators in year one and as teachers in classrooms that serve children with special needs in year two.

The Masters Plus Certification Program in Exceptional Children and Youth was developed and is administered by a collaborative partnership among the Delaware Department of Education, Delaware public and charter schools, and the University of Delaware .

The partnership draws on the strengths and expertise of each partner to deliver a unique, high quality preparation program for candidates interested in pursuing a career in teaching children with special needs.
