The percentage of school-aged students (ages 5-17) of color is expected to increase to 44% by the year 2020. However, based on current statistics, only 15% of the students preparing to become teachers are diverse. The University of Delaware is committed to preparing a diverse corps of highly-qualified teachers. Thus, the ASPIRE program, established in 1991, supports the recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented groups enrolled in professional education programs at the University of Delaware.
