Theatre Production
The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Production is
designed for those students who are interested in learning about the
production areas of theatre, such as scenery, lighting, properties, sound,
costuming, and stage management, through the prescribed course work and
practical experience of a major. It is important to realize that the
Theatre Production major is not intended to be a professional training
program for careers in the theatre profession upon graduation, nor is it a
performance degree. Students interested in pursuing performing
opportunities can become involved with the theatre students groups on
campus such as E-52, Harrington Theatre Arts Company (HTAC), Bacchus
Players, or Khulumani Theatre - all registered student organizations.
Within the Theatre Production major, students gain practical experience in
the production areas by participating in production assignments on the
plays that are produced within the graduate-level Professional Theatre
Training Program (PTTP). The Theatre Department also offers a Theatre
Minor designed to deepen a student's appreciation of theatre. Theatre
Department undergraduate courses are designed to give the student a
foundation in the viewing of theatre, as well as the art and craft of
theatre.
The Theatre Production major does not prepare
students for immediate employment in professional theatre upon graduation
from the University. However, should they decide to pursue theatre
production as a career, graduates are competitive for applying to graduate
training programs.
Employment in the theatre, whether in the
schools,
university or commercial theatre, is extremely competitive, with only the most
skilled and gifted succeeding. Positions that are sought after include
teachers, promotions/public relations/management specialists, technicians,
stage managers, scenic/lighting/costume designers, makeup artists, actors and
directors. Education, stage, film and television are examples of popular
fields. Majoring in theatre production enhances an individual's
organizational and technical skills as well as written
and oral expressive abilities. These skills and abilities are assets for many
jobs outside of theatre that require an ability to communicate dynamically
with others.

or the minor in Theatre, contact Professor Joann Browning, Associate Chair,
Theatre Department, 413 Academy Street, Newark, DE 19716, or call 831-2201,
