The Department of Communication at the University of Delaware has adopted a social and behavioral science orientation toward the study of human communication. All majors study a broad spectrum of communication phenomena, including interpersonal, small group, organizational, public speaking, and mass communication. Classes in these areas emphasize the use of theory and research to understand and analyze critically a variety of communication processes.

A major in communication is designed to increase knowledge about communication processes, to increase awareness of the potential impact of communication on society, and to make students more competent in communicating with others and in assisting others to communicate more effectively.

Although the Department offers an occasional hands-on, skills-oriented course (e.g., TV Production), such courses are designed solely to supplement the larger emphasis on critical thinking. Students should NOT expect and will not receive a complete degree program in mass media production or any other skills-oriented area.

Questions about the Department's orientation or specific course context should be directed to the Communication Department at (302) 831-8041.
