Writing Assignment #4
Due: Monday, May 12, 2003
News Documentary Technique
Preamble:
You have observed a variety of television techniques used in
the news documentaries we have seen so far this semester. Just one
example: some programs featured prominent host/anchors; others were
prepared with (nearly) anonymous narrators or without narration.
There have been a variety of visual, interviewing and production
techniques used. Despite the variety, the lack of "formula," each of
these programs has been a landmark in the history of TV news
documentary.
Write:
Referring to specific programs we have seen in this course,
and taking advantage of (and specifically referring to) course
readings, analyze the effectiveness of these techniques for their
goals and subjects. Which have worked best? Which have been least
effective? Why?
Devote some time in the conclusion of your essay to whether any of these techniques remain in use - and are effective or ineffective - on television today. Consider your own observation of societal changes, media industry changes, audience changes, especially now that you can compare to how and why TV news documentaries were produced in the "golden age."
You need not discuss every documentary we've seen, but be sure to discuss several different approaches you've observed.
