"Raiding the Lost Ark: The Golden Age of TV News Documentary"

Writing Assignment #2

Due: Monday, March 17, 2003

Migrant Workers

Preamble & Research:

You are a young television network news producer who has a bright idea: You've heard some things about agricultural and other "migrant workers" in the United States in recent years. You decide to propose a TV documentary program on the subject, because you think Americans should know about the issue. Investigate news reports and other recent publications about "migrant workers" in the United States. Stick to the 1990's and 2000's. What kinds of work do migrant workers do in the U.S? Where do they work? How do they get there? Where is "home?" How are they paid? What are their housing, education and other living conditions?

Write:

Prepare a 3-4 page description/outline of the documentary you propose to produce. Where will you go to videotape? What kinds of people will you interview (and why)? What questions will you pose and answer in the course of your one-hour program? Will you make comparisons to previous eras? (Why or why not?) Don't overlook the possibility of finding "a good story" right in your own back yard. On a "sources" page, indicate the sources you consulted for your documentary proposal.
