The Quiz Show Scandals
Research:
Investigate the details and context of the "quiz show scandals" in the U.S. television industry in the 1950's. Explore what actually happened in the quiz shows. What brought about the quiz show affair? What effect did the scandals have on government's relationship with the broadcast industry and what effect did that have on the news divisions of the major networks? Was there any connection between the quiz show scandals and television news documentaries produced in the late 1950's and early 1960's?
Write:
You are the President of CBS. You have been summoned to Washington to explain your network's behavior in the quiz show affair before a public session of congress, which passes laws regulating the broadcasting industry.
Before you leave for Washington, you consult with your subordinates at CBS in New York, including the director of public relations and the head of CBS News. You all come up with a plan to stave off new congressional regulations and to restore public confidence in your network.
In a 3-4 page "executive summary" addressed to critical members of congress, explain how the quiz show scandals affected CBS and how you propose to get out of this mess.
