Very Special Arts Delaware

VERY SPECIAL ARTS - DELAWARE (VSA-DE) is committed to providing arts opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The organization has operated and built a strong base with the support and facilities provided by the Christina School District and University of Delaware's College of Human Resources, Education and Urban Affairs. VSA-DE functions as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization with ongoing arts programming. The programming is highlighted by a statewide yearly festival held at a public mall. It is hoped that the participants in the yearly festival will receive positive reinforcement for their efforts and the festival will contribute significantly to raising public awareness of the creative ability and potential exhibited by many of the handicapped participants.

The mission of Very Special Arts - Delaware is to enhance the capabilities, confidence and quality of life for children and adults with disabilities by providing learning opportunities in dance, theater, creative writing, music, and the visual arts.

Very Special Arts - Delaware Activities

  • special projects such as the "Veterans Project," theatre experiences, and VSA-DE art awards

  • mini-festivals in cooperation with the Delaware State Federation of Women's Clubs held in local communities, libraries, state fair, and other local venues

  • artist-in-residency funding for programs at selected sites

  • yearly statewide festival at an indoor mall in central Delaware

  • specialized arts training for artists, educators, and community service providers

  • public awareness of VSA through the press, TV, public service announcements, and community sessions

  • fundraising activities through grants, proposals, and sponsor organizations

  • extended support and cooperation with numerous statewide organizations

    Very Special Arts is an international non-profit organization that creates learning opportunities through the arts for people with disabilities, especially children and youth. The organization was founded in 1974 by Jean Kennedy Smith as an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Using creative writing, dance, drama, music, and the visual arts, our educational programs help people with disabilities develop learning skills, nuture independence and self-worth, and enhance well-being in every area of life. Very Special Arts programs are provided in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, New York City, and in 85 countries worldwide. Very Special Arts state affiliates serve approximately 2.5 million people across the United States, and our international affiliates serve an additional one million people.
