Guideline 14

14. Can we ask scientists at the Delaware Geological Survey about this project?

It really depends upon what you want to ask. I would recommend that you do not visit the DGS until you have found and read the files on their web site. The DGS facility is an excellent resource - they have maps, publications, and a seismograph station that you can actually observe. However, the staff is small, they have limited time, and they have a very high work load. I think it would be unfair for them to be visited by 200 students a semester. Thus, while I do not want to discourage students from pursuing a valuable resource, I ask that you think very hard about what you might want to ask of the staff there - basic questions like "Is Delaware going to have an earthquake?" would be inappropriate, while questions such as "How can I obtain a geological map of the Dover region?" would be. Remember that your task is to construct an argument, and that the quality of a scientific argument does not rest on the authority of an individual, but upon the evidence they marshal to support their argument. This is a very important aspect of the philosophy of science - science is better off when we are skeptical, no matter who makes the argument.
