CITE Mission
Through its work, the Center seeks to promote the development of pluralistic, global and constructivist perspectives in its clientele.
- A pluralistic perspective is characterized by an unwavering respect for individual and group differences of all kinds (e.g., race, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation) as well as by a personal commitment to the elimination of prejudice and discriminatory policies/practices based on such differences. On the part of educators, it means a commitment to equal opportunity and social justice for all, especially in the classroom and the school.
- A global perspective involves an appreciation for and understanding of the emerging world systems (e.g., economic, political, communication) that profoundly influence what humans do and how they do it. It also involves respect f or the customs, aspirations, and contributions of all cultures as well as a commitment to peace and social justice both here and abroad.
- A constructivist perspective is rooted in the belief that we are responsible for our actions and their consequences; that within each one of us is the power to initiate positive changes at the local, national and international l evels; and that each of us has the responsibility to stand up and be counted, especially when we find it necessary to fight for an unpopular cause in the face of peer or societal pressure to conform.
