SO NOW YOU’RE WONDERING...

"What is ASPIRE?"

More than 30% of our nation's school children are non-white, but only 13% of our country's teachers are African-American, Hispanic, or Native American. The University of Delaware is committed to helping diminish this difference through the active recruitment and comprehensive preparation of teachers from these under-represented groups. Thus, the ASPIRE program was established in 1991 and is housed within the Delaware Center for Teacher Education. It is a recruitment and retention program for the above mentioned groups of students who are interested in teaching as a career.

ASPIRE students receive intense academic advising, especially during their freshman and sophomore years, to ensure a successful transition to college.

Interesting facts about ASPIRE

The ASPIRE Program has dramatically increased the number of UD-prepared minority students who are entering the teaching profession.  In the years before the ASPIRE Program began, only two or three minority candidates graduated each year.  Since the inception of the ASPIRE Program in 1991, 82 students have graduated in elementary and special education alone.  There are currently 143 African American, Asian American, Hispanic, and Native American students enrolled in teacher education programs at the University of Delaware.
