Computing
Policy describes the acceptable use of the University's computing resources. This policy mentions the use of properly licensed software. Additional
details are found in the User and System Administrator's responsibilities of the
Recommended Guidelines for Units Implementing the Policy for Responsible Computing
at the University of Delaware. These guidelines also include information on misuse, privacy, user
confidentiality, system integrity. The Wireless Computing at the University of Delaware policy details the regulation of airspace used for wireless computing. The Library's information on copyright includes general resources on copyright and intellectual property.
The draft policy for P2P file sharing applications states that sharing copyrighted MP3 files is illegal. MP3 files are commonly shared using file-sharing applications (for example Napster and Gnutella) and their use raises important issues regarding copyright law, network traffic and security. Electronic Mail The Electronic Mail Management and Retention policy explains employee responsibilities regarding the creation and routine removal of e-mail messages. It also describes responsibilities regarding retention of electronic mail messages which are official records. The Employees' Use of E-Communication policy details requirements for good electronic community citizenship. The Policy for Use of University Owned Mailing Lists details the use of University owned mailing lists. It specifically mentions that unauthorized use of University owned mailing lists is prohibited including electronic mailing lists, which are governed by the Policy for Responsible Computing. Web Pages The Employee Use of Computing Resources for Home Pages policy explains acceptable purposes for creating a home page. The Inbound Transmission of Credit Card Information on the World Wide Web policy defines the minimum technical criteria that must be met for departments to accept credit card information over the web. The Web Developer's
IdeaCenter is a key resource for web page developers. It includes information on creating web pages, standards, policies, templates and utilities. Security The Personal Non-Public Information (PNPI) Policy Policy expands on the Information Security Policy re: the security of the University's information. The Information Security Policy explains employee responsibility for the security of the University's information. The Policies and Procedures for the Implementation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (amended,1995) (FERPA) explains the rights, privileges, and protections of students concerning records maintained by the University. The Office of the Registrar has information about FERPA regarding posting of grades, handling calls from parents, and providing directory
information to third parties.
