Apparel
Design
. . . the conceptualization, design and pre-production of
products for apparel-related industries. Students
research and analyze trends, evaluate consumer markets,
use technology to conceptualize, design and produce apparel
products, and prepare promotional presentations. A
fully equipped computer-aided design (CAD) facility with
professional design software is used extensively throughout
the curriculum. Both Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising
students can study in Europe and the Fashion Institute of
Technology in New York City. The opportunity to double-major
in Fashion Merchandising is an option for all majors.
Early Childhood
Education
. . . for students who plan to work with young children (birth to eight years of age) and their families in schools, child care programs, community agencies and early intervention programs. Students can earn a Delaware teaching certification qualifying them to work with students from birth to second grade in both early childhood education and early childhood special education. The program provides up to six practicum placements and an 18-week student teaching experience with close student-faculty relationships.
Educational
Studies
. . . the study of education as part of a liberal arts curriculum.
Course work provides students with knowledge about the fundamental
structure of the educational process. Flexibility
of requirements allows students to build a program based
on their special interests and apply the study of education
to careers in business, law, journalism, publishing, or
similar fields. A senior research project /internship,
working closely with faculty, provides intensive exposure
to current educational issues and opens the door to career
opportunities. (Only available to internal transfers.)
Elementary
Teacher Education (including special education)
. . . designed to prepare students for careers as
teachers of exceptional children and/or regular elementary
education (K-4, 5-8) with additional endorsements in middle
school mathematics, middle school science, bilingual education
or teaching English as a second language. Most students
complete a program of study that will allow them to become
certified in more than one area thereby greatly increasing
their employability. A rigorous liberal arts academic
preparation, a strong foundation in the methodology of teaching,
and participation in many varied field experiences working
with children gives students the knowledge and competencies
to enter the teaching profession well prepared.
Fashion Merchandising
. . . the planning, production, promotion and distribution
of products in fashion industries to meet consumer demand.
Course work helps students to plan and promote fashion products,
design and use visual communication, define and analyze
target markets, and evaluate products and consumption patterns.
The facilities offer several areas for fashion promotion
activities, including a microcomputer laboratory that supports
merchandising industry software. If desired,
students can complete the requirements of both the Apparel
Design and Fashion Merchandising programs and enhance their
employment opportunities in the fashion industry through
summer internships.
Human Services
. . . for students who are interested in working with public and private human service programs, government agencies, and advocacy groups. Two concentrations are available: clinical services, which focuses on preparing students to provide supports and to work with children, adolescents, and adults; and administration and family policy, which prepares students to develop and administer human service programs, advocate for programs, and develop public policy related to family supports for individuals across the lifespan. During their senior year students spend a full semester in an internship with a human services agency. Undergraduate research, study abroad, and honors program options complement the major.
Human Services,
Education and Public Policy
... for students who are interested in the areas of study
offered by CHEP, but who have their own specific career
goals. Emphasizing professional skills and including opportunities
for internships and service learning, the major is designed
around a selection of interdisciplinary core courses that
reflect CHEP's mission -- to address problems that affect
children, families, schools, communities, the environment,
consumers and service institutions, and public policies.
Students select a primary interest area and pair it with
a University minor to prepare themselves for careers in
diverse and challenging areas, such as leadership studies
within human services organizations, the application of
data management skills to the hospitality industry or nonprofit
sector, or policy development within educational settings.
Leadership
. . . the interaction between individuals and the marketplace,
emphasizing the effect of resource use, public policy and
corporate decision-making on consumer welfare. Course
work helps students acquire greater awareness of consumer
welfare, cultivate skills in communicating ideas, administer
organizations, research business and economic trends, and
manage corporate relations with consumers as employees and
customers. A summer internship program enhances employment
opportunities. An accelerated program leading to the Bachelor
of Science and the Masters of Public Administration is available.

Disabilities
Studies
...provides an opportunity for students from a variety of
disciplines to gain a substantive introduction to and understanding
of the biological, social, and psychological origins and
ramifications of disabilities. The program provides coherence
and g uidance in the study of the meaning of disabilities
to individuals and their families; and the social, fiscal,
and institutional policy issues. The program is designed
to increase interdisciplinary understanding of disability
and provide students, throu gh the senior seminar, with
an experience integrating their major with disability issues.
