Old Business:

Students of color in CHEP – Mark Fleming spoke on recruiting and retaining students of color

  • There are differences within UD among the black student population - not a homogenous group.
  • Term “students of color” may not necessarily be appropriate because students need to be identified based on ethnic heritage and cultural context.
  • African American students have unique needs - need to be addressed in context of a predominantly white campus

Comments from Dean and council members

  • Need to follow-up in Fall on Aspire, Urban League, and other initiatives
  • Need to recruit downstate.
  • Mark Fleming should conduct a seminar to faculty regarding students of color.
  • Latino students should be included in this effort.
