Irradiation of Food: Safe and Effective
Proposition: Irradiation to preserve food, as done by the military, should be used to increase the shelf life and reduce waste of supermarket foods as well.
The irradiation of food can help preserve food, but still remains controversial. The United States military and NASA both use food irradiation. However, some consumers are still skeptical of its commercial use. Irradiation has proven to destroy several types of harmful bacteria and parasitic organisms that would otherwise inhabit food. This website is dedicated to enlightening the public to the facts about food irradiation. From this site, there are links that provide background information, information about the mechanism of food irradiation, as well as the pros and cons of food irradiation. Considering the current research on food irradiation, we conclude that the irradiation of food should be utilized.
