My current interests lie in chemical education for the general chemistry population and ways to involve large classes in an active learning environment. The use of a Personal Response System (clickers) is being explored. The clickers allow instant assessment of student understanding of topics covered. In addition to the routine use throughout each lecture, a set of quiz questions, which are then worked on as a class, are being developed to use as a once a week assessment of deeper understanding. In conjunction with the teaching of lecture sections work is being done to upgrade the laboratory component of the class. Electronic prelab activities are being developed to encourage the students to spend more time preparing for the lab experience. The purpose is to help the students develop a better understanding of the work they are going to be doing in lab and to help them see the connection between class work and lab work. Also, in conjunction with other authors, the laboratory manual is being upgraded with an eye towards making the experiments more environmentally friendly and to better reenforce the concepts taught in class. Also, lab simulations are being developed for those experiments that are considered to hazardous to be performed by large groups of students.
