BLUE HEN CHEMIST

Number 32 John L. Burmeister, Editor August, 2005

ALUMNI NEWS

Your Editor was privileged, this past academic year, to attend three CHEM/BIOC alumni gatherings. The first two were planned reunions, while the third was coincidental.

On 10/18/04, Ned Heindel (MS61, PhD63) was the prime mover in gathering eight of his graduate school classmates and their spouses at Matilda’s, in Newark: Donald Bretzger (MS60, PhD64), Edmund Zavaglia (MS60, PhD64), Ray Hilliard (MS61, PhD64), Amy Law (MS63, PhD69), Laurence Brydia (PhD64), Russell Farris (PhD64), Peter Strilko (PhD64), and Kenneth Wise (PhD65). Also in attendance were Prof. Emeritus Don Dennis (FAC 61-99) and Asso. Prof. Emeritus Wallace McCurdy (FAC 59-92). Greetings were sent by several others who were unable to attend: Harold Pier (MS59, PhD62), Robert Soeder (MS59, PhD62), Francis Scalzi (MS60, PhD63), Howard Bender (PhD62), Robert Orr (MS62, PhD64), Tsuneichi Takeshita (PhD62), Walter Meier (PhD64), Henry Richmond (PhD64), Prof. Emeritus Edward Schweizer (FAC 61-94), Asso. Prof. Emeritus Conrad Trumbore (FAC 60-97), and Prof. Emeritus Robert Wood (FAC 57-02).

While there was no waltzing, reminiscences were many, especially those involving the Wammer (the late Prof. William A. Mosher, who chaired our Department from 1946 to 1969). I felt right at home with this group, since I completed my doctorate at Northwestern in 1963. Indeed, Ray Hilliard was one of my chemistry major classmates at Franklin and Marshall College.

The fourth annual reunion of the Amalgamated and Condensed Chemists (5/14/05, at the Deer Park, in Newark) was a bit smaller, but no less spirited. Those gathered about the bottle of their sacred elixir (an unopened bottle of Carling’s Red Cap Ale, circa ‘73) included: John Baldwin, Ph.D. (BS56), Leon DeBrabender (BS56), David Jordan (BS56), C. Lewis Hoffner, Esq. (BS56), Walter Lafferty, Ph.D. (BS56), and Maurice (Mario) LePera (BS56). Glenn S. Skinner, Jr., M.D. (BS56) and Robert Wilson (BS56) joined us via cell phone.

The Amalgamates’ favorite CHEM teachers included Professors Harold Beachell (FAC46-75), Quaesita Drake (FAC 18-55), Harold Kwart (FAC51-83), Cecil Lynch (FAC33-58), William Mosher (FAC45-72), and John Wriston (FAC55-85). Prof. Glenn Skinner’s (FAC28-58) organic course was unanimously regarded as the most difficult course in their curriculum. I’m proud to have been appointed their Honorary Adviser. [See p. 38 for a picture of the Amalgamates in their prime.]

Finally, Aileen and I were delighted to share a table with Richard Cecil (BS52), accompanied by his wife Lynn, and Reed Pyeritz, M.D., Ph.D. (BS68), with his daughter Abigail, at the University’s gala celebration of the successful completion of the Capital Campaign, held in the Carpenter Center on 5/7/05. Dick and Lynn are living in retirement in Lewes, DE. Reed is the Chief of Medical Genetics at the University of Pennsylvania, and will serve as our featured speaker at the 11th CHEM/BIOC Graduation Convocation, on 5/27/06.

THIRTIES:

Harold E. Tiffany, Jr. (BS39), one of our oldest living alumni, died on 5/7/05, at the age of 87. Harold began his career as a chemist with the Wilmington Testing and Research Laboratories. After a brief stint working at Hercules, he accepted a position as a research chemist with the Sun Oil Company in 1945. He retired from Sun in 1982.

FORTIES:

A mini-controversy has finally been laid to rest. For quite some time, your Editor has been operating under the impression that H. Anthony (Tony) Neidig (MS46, PhD48) and Richard Gale (PhD48) received the first doctorates awarded by the University of Delaware. `Tain´t so! James W. Westwater (MChe43, PhD48) was officially awarded his doctorate in chemical engineering on 6/7/48, whereas Dick and Tony didn’t officially receive their doctorates in chemistry until 9/22/48. Evidently, the delay, in their case, was due to the fact that they didn’t pay their publication deposit until 8/19/48, whereas Jim paid his earlier.

FIFTIES:

Richard G. Goodley (BS54, MS58) recently returned to campus for his class’s 50th reunion. His take on the present state of the University: “the most beautiful campus I’ve ever seen!”. <maggrg@earthlink.net>

Prior to coming to McDaniel College, she worked for 8 years as a science writer, editor, and publications manager for the National Aquarium, in Baltimore. Peggy’s chemical genes may be traced to her father, Louis C.
