My
research is focussed on the development of T-jump/Raman spectroscopy, a
complement to T-jump/FTIR spectroscopy. Both T-jump experiments utilize
a controlled, high heating rate to pyrolyze energetic materials.
FTIR and Raman spectroscopy are used to detect the gaseous products evolved
from decomposition. T-jump/Raman spectroscopy allows the inclusion
of IR-inactive species such as nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen in the accounting
of the decomposition mechanism. Although the Raman experiment only
allows post-reaction concentrations, the FTIR studies allow real time “snapshots”
of product evolution. The method was validated using several test
species and applied to three classes of energetic materials: cured mixtures
of BTTN/GAP/RDX, nitrate esters, and 5-substituted 1,3,5-trinitrohexahydropyrimidines. |
