Join us for a memorable vocal recital in celebration of Black History Month featuring the world famous tenor Lawrence Brownlee and the renowned collaborative pianist Martin Katz in his second MPCS appearance. Brownlee is winner of both the 2006 Richard Tucker and Marian Anderson Awards— “An astonishing technician who rightly brought the house down.” (The Sunday Times [London]) “Martin Katz must surely be considered the dean of collaborative pianists.” (The Los Angeles Times)

Seussical: Theatreworks USA

Family Performing Arts Series

Mitchell Hall Theatre

“Oh, the thinks you can think” when Dr. Seuss’ best-loved characters and stories hit the stage in the Seussical. The noble Horton the Elephant, the one-feathered bird Gertrude McFuzz, and the antics of the Cat in the Hat steal the spotlight in one of Theatreworks USA’s largest-scale productions to date. Come see this unforgettable musical adventure by Broadway veterans Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens adapted especially for young audiences.

Karthik Seshadri

Karthik Seshadri is a renowned sitar virtuoso, composer, educator, and the foremost disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Hailed as a child prodigy in India by critics at the age of six, Seshadri had already embarked on an illustrious performing career when in 1965 he met Shankar, who became a profound musical influence in his life. Seshadri appears as a soloist in major venues throughout India and abroad where his performances are noted for their expressive beauty, rich tonal sensibility, and extraordinary rhythmic intricacy. “Breathtaking…” (Los Angeles Times)

presents African Tarantella ... Dances with Duke

“One of the most important young artists in jazz” (Los Angeles Times) Stefon Harris’ passionate artistry, energetic stage presence, and astonishing virtuosity have propelled him into the forefront of the current jazz scene. Widely recognized and lauded by both his peers and jazz critics alike, the 30 year-old is committed to both exploring the rich potential of jazz composition and blazing new trails on the vibraphone. Inspired by the compositions of Duke Ellington, Stefon Harris will present African Tarantella . . . Dances with Duke with a nonet of stellar sidemen.

Newark: The Opera

Performing Arts Series

Thompson Theatre - Roselle CFA

Newark: The Opera is a site-specific show written especially for and about Newark, Delaware as the town celebrates the 250th anniversary of its royal charter. This production will weave music, hometown stories, and local participation with aural and visual trickery. Squonk Opera, who created the hometown opera project, brings this multi-media, family friendly production to its first stop in the First State. “A quirky, playful, music-and image-driven piece of performance art that offers a nontraditional view of a place you thought you knew.” (Pittsburgh Tribune Review) Recommended for ages 7 and up.

This event was made possible, in part, by grants from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
