What is the Stock Market Game TM?

The Stock Market GameTM (SMG) is an educational simulation that introduces students to the exciting world of Wall Street and teaches them about the stock markets, the American economic system, and the global economy. No prior knowledge about the stock market is needed!

Since 1983 the Stock Market Game TM has been offered in Delaware exclusively by the Delaware Council on Economic Education at the Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware.

  • Participants develop skills in math, language arts, research and critical thinking, while building and maintaining a stock portfolio.
  • SMG is used in grades 4-12, college courses, and by those who seek to learn more about investing.
  • Since 1977, the program has given educators a way to improve the learning experience in thousands of classrooms.

What Do I Need to Know About the Stock Market to Participate?

NO prior knowledge about the stock market is required to participate.

  • Free teacher workshops are offered upstate and downstate in September and January.
  • For groups of 10 or more, personalized workshops can be arranged.
  • University of Delaware finance student mentors are available to visit classrooms.
  • A binder of reference materials is given to all teachers.
  • Lessons for almost every topic such as diversification are available for download from the SMG teacher’s administrative site or from the SMG coordinator.
  • Help from the SMG coordinator or a mentor is always just a phone call or an e-mail away.

Why is the SMG program such a great learning tool?
Because participants of all ages and ability levels will:

GAIN an understanding of how and why our economic system works.
APPLY
mathematics, social studies, reading, economics to daily decisions.
LEARN teamwork, cooperation, and time and information management skills.
INCREASE computer proficiency and learn Internet research skills.
DISCOVER the rewards involved in making educated decisions.
COMPETE in grade/age divisions.
MEET state standards.

How does it work?

Teams of one to six students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in a portfolio of common stocks listed on the New York and American stock exchanges and the Nasdaq stock market.

Teams use the internet to follow their portfolios, research stock, enter trades at real-time prices, and see their weekly division ranking. At the end of the 10-week period, the team in each division with the highest dollar value portfolio wins the game. Statewide winners are honored at an awards reception and presented with certificates.

The SMG has 3 levels of competition: Grades 4-6, Grades 7-8 and Grades 9-12. On a basic level, trades may be limited to a simple buy and sell transaction. For more advanced players, the game allows for short selling and buying on margin.

Are curriculum materials provided?

Lesson plans, curriculum guides, teacher resources and videos for all grade and ability levels are available on the website.

What does it cost?

Costs are assessed at a fee of $20 per team. The fee is paid at the time of registration and helps defray the cost of mailings, computer processing time and printing.

SUGGESTIONS FOR ADVISORS WITH LIMITED COMPUTER ACCESS

When organizing teams, be sure there is one student on each team who has a computer at home who can be designated as the "trade enterer." Team decisions and related lessons can take place in the classroom during class time. Teachers with only a few teams and a computer at home or in the school’s library can collect trades from the teams and enter the trades themselves. Teams can be assigned certain days to use a school’s limited computer resources (usually in the library) and spread them out over a one-week period so everyone gets to trade once a week. Public libraries often have computers with Internet connections that can be scheduled for use.
