| Stubbs' Kids Thrive in their Mini-Society....
An article entitled “Stubbs’ Kids Thrive in Their Mini-Society,” was written by Edward L. Kenny and posted in the Wilmington News Journal on Sunday, January 13th. Tina Windsor, a teacher who started using the Mini-Society program in her classroom at Stubbs Intermediate this year, was quoted as saying, “I think it really opens their eyes up and lets them know they really have the opportunity to open their own business.” Windsor, who teaches writing, said 188 sixth graders are participating and the Mini-Society is being used in both writing and social studies classes. Not only are the students learning how society and entrepreneurship work, they are writing compositions critiquing the program and thank-you letters to business professionals who have visited their classrooms. The students’ enthusiasm was evident in the article. “It was kind of fun, like we were adults,” said Monique Mensah who learned the value of saving after spending most of the profits on other merchandise. “You get to own your own business and be in charge of your own company,” added Maged Almadhrahi who learned about profit margin. Bonnie Meszaros, Associate Director of the Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship, has held Mini-Society workshops each year for the past 25 years and more than half of the public schools districts in Delaware use the program. “It’s one of the most powerful instructional programs we’ve been involved in,” she said. “I think it makes children better problem solvers.” The article in its entirety can be purchased from the news archives section of Delaware Online. _____________________________________ |
