Courses for Elementary Educators

Economics for the Elementary Educator (K - 6)

This 3 credit graduate class takes place on the University of Delaware campus from July 7th through 18th (Monday through Friday), from 8:30 am. to 2:30 p.m.  The course covers the fundamental economic concepts required by the Delaware State Social Studies Standards.  It introduces teachers to lessons and activities appropriate for their students while integrating the content with reading, language arts, and math.

Mini-Society
(3 - 6)

This one credit (pass/fail) graduate course is designed to help teachers set up an economy in their own classrooms and to provide the strategies and lessons to debrief the students’ experience of running their own businesses.  Understanding how an economy operates is part of the State Social Studies Standards.  An additional pass/fail credit is available for implementing Mini-Society.  The class meets at the Carter Center in Georgetown from July 8th through 10th (Tuesday through Thursday), from 9:00 am until 3:30 pm. Free books and materials are provided.

Economics and Children’s Literature (K – 3)

This one credit graduate course will use children’s literature to teach the State Economic Standards for grades K-3.  The dates for this course are July 21st through 25th (Monday through Friday), from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The class will be held on the University of Delaware campus. Participants will learn economic concepts and receive lessons for how to teach these concepts using popular children’s books. Participants will also learn how to identify books that are appropriate for the various grade levels that fit the economic benchmarks.

Courses for K-12 Educators

Money Talk$ Institute (K - 12) - CANCELLED

This 2 credit (pass/fail) graduate seminar offered in partnership with the Delaware Money School and funded by Citi mixes presentations by banking and financial experts with curriculum application projects. The main objective of the course is to provide engaging opportunities for teachers to gain a financial education background to use with their students.  Dates for this course are June 16th through 20th (Monday through Friday), from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The class will be held at Citigroup Delaware in the Pike Creek facility.

Making Sense of Money and Banking (K - 12)


This 2 credit (pass/fail) graduate class will be held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia from July 14th through 18th (Monday through Friday), from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m.  Along with an in-depth look at the money and banking system in the United States, teachers will receive lessons and activities to teach these important concepts to their students. For Delaware teachers, this covers Economics Standard Two. Teachers interested should register online at http://www.philadelphiafed.org/education/programs/. Economics for the Secondary Educator: Microeconomics (7 - 12)

This 3 credit graduate course covers fundamental economic concepts with an emphasis on microeconomics (Standard One). It introduces teachers to economic activities and lessons appropriate for use with their students.  Particular emphasis is placed on connecting curriculum and content to help teachers implement Delaware’s Economic Standards for grades 7 - 12.  Participants will be developing and implementing economic activities and tasks for use in their classrooms.  Dates for this course are July 7th through 18th (Monday through Friday), from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The class will be held on campus at the University of Delaware.
