The Summer Transition Education Program (STEP) is an interactive week-long college experience for young adults with disabilities ages 16 - 21.
Using a “person-centered philosophy,” STEP trainers provide coaching support and learning opportunities as students identify personal goals in areas such as interpersonal life skills, leisure and career exploration, post secondary education, and advocacy. This information is used as the stepping stones for developing a person-centered plan, which serves as a blueprint for action that the students implement upon their return home.
Students will live in a UD campus dormitory, participate in workshops, hear guest speakers, and be actively involved in a variety of learning experiences on campus and in the community. The entire week is aimed at promoting successful transition to adulthood by giving participants opportunities to learn and practice skills necessary to achieving their goals. In the evening, the students participate in fun, hands-on activities and social events. The week-long learning opportunity culminates in a graduation ceremony on the last day.
The cost for the programincludes all meals, dormitory housing, educational classes, evening activities, and materials. STEP does not offer nor provide compensation for any type of personal assistance or care; however students and families may make arrangements to secure these services on their own.
STEP is part of the model transition project developed by University of Delaware ’s Center for Disabilities Studies to empower young adults with disabilities to achieve greater independence, develop social networks, and realize concrete outcomes based on the each student’s hopes and dreams.
STEP is not being conducted during the summer of 2011.
