Center for Disabilities Studies : Community Education : New Visions

New Visions

New Visions consists of two one-day seminars.

New Visions I

This six-hour seminar offers an introduction to developmental disabilities by using active training techniques to present basic concepts and to promote discussion about current problems and future directions in the support of individuals with disabilities. New Visions I includes a discussion of issues surrounding the rights of people with disabilities, history of treatment of people with disabilities, People First Language and general information about mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism and seizure disorder.

New Visions II

This six-hour seminar examines the attitudes and assumptions of person-centered approaches (such as Essential Lifestyle Planning). It also explores the ideas of consumer empowerment and self-determination, including a discussion of the responsibilities of support professionals to encourage and teach self-advocacy skills to individuals with developmental disabilities.

Special Note: New Visions is a prerequisite for the Innovative Concepts and Practices (ICP) Certificate Program, Individual and Family Support Coordination Certificate Program, Shared Living Certificate Program and First Line Supervisor (FLS) Training.

Cost

New Visions is offered at no cost for employees of DDDS or DDDS-funded agencies and for DDDS service users. New Visions is offered at no cost to family members and people with disabilities. Others will be charged a nominal fee of $10 per seminar. New Visions I & II student packets and instructor guides are also available for purchase.

DDDS funded agencies should note that New Visions not only fulfills DDDS annual staff in-service requirements, but also can be directly substituted for the DDDS courses: Client Rights, Intro to MR/DD, Intro to Essential Lifestyle Planning, and Cultural Diversity.

Calendar

Please check back in August for the fall schedule of classes.

A University of Delaware certificate is awarded upon completion of the sessions.
