How Can I Make My Event Greener?
Environmentally conscious event planning is something being embraced by many of our customers, and we would like to help you in your efforts!
The following are some suggestions for helping to make your event a little more “green”. Please note that some of these options will incur fees, as noted.
- When picking your event venue or location, choose the option with the most natural light. If you are holding an outdoor event, remember to consider using a tent or covering, or have a rain location to fall back on.
- Advertise your event online, or via email.
- Reduce the impact of handouts by using recycled paper and printing on both sides of the sheet with vegetable or soy-based inks.
- Reuse items like nametags and signs.
- If handing out literature and/or samples, provide attendees with a reusable container to store and transport them (pocket or file folders, cloth bags).
- Encourage attendees to carpool, or offer mass transportation and shuttle service options.
- Go digital: Conduct registration online; post speakers’ notes, along with any other conference proceedings, electronically.
- For larger events, request recycling bins from Facilities or through the Catering department (please note, there may be additional charges for this service).
- Request china, flatware, and glassware as opposed to disposable service ware (please note that for events held in Clayton Hall, Trabant University Center, and Perkins Student Center, there are no additional fees for this service, except where noted; for events held in alternate locations, there are additional fees associated with this level of service).
- Provide accurate guest counts to minimize food waste. (This will also help your budget!)
- Consider buffet-style events as opposed to boxed lunches.
- Green your decorations. If you are providing your own centerpieces, look for items that can be reused or are recycled (not all centerpieces have to be flowers). If you are utilizing centerpieces from the Catering department, please be assured that we reuse them as much as possible, and do everything possible to extend their shelf life.
We are also currently doing research to identify additional disposable products that will provide you with further “green” options. If you have specific needs for an event, please don’t hesitate to ask us!
