Skillstreaming

Another curriculum for teaching social skills is the "Skillstreaming Series". This selection of books is published by Research Press. While I have not read the series and can not make a personal recommendation, I've heard that the books are fairly technical and seemed geared towards instructing professionals in the techniques of social skills training. I've also heard that in spite of this, the series is excellent and many families and professional have found them very helpful.

From the Research Press Catalog:

"Skillstreaming addresses the social skill needs of students who display aggression, immaturity, withdrawal, or other problem behaviors. It is designed to help youngsters develop competence in dealing with interpersonal conflicts, learn to use self-control, and contribute to a positive classroom atmosphere.

"The Skillstreaming approach utilizes modeling, role playing, performance feedback, and transfer (homework)."

The description for Skillstreaming the Elementary School Child says: "The curriculum is divided into five skill groups: Classroom Survival Skills, Friendship-Making Skills, Dealing with Feelings, Alternatives to Aggression, and Dealing with Stress.

"Within these skill groups the authors provide strategies for teaching 60 specific prosocial skills, such as asking for help, saying thank you, using self-control, accepting consequences, making a complaint, and dealing with group pressure."
