Family Matters: Contributions From
Family and Friends

David

by Helen Sargeant

               Lights on.
               Words mean,
               Gestures have power,
               Little quiet phrases sneak
               from your rose-red lips,
               over baby teeth worn down
               by too long a stay.
               'Daddy' is everyone.
               The world comes together
               in a neat circle.

               The world shards,
               no pieces matching.
               You make train noises,
               point with your liquid eyes,
               fingerspell in no language,
               flap your hands in delight.
               'A-gee' is everything.
               You wet yourself, uncaring.
               Words are noise.
               Lights out.
