Winter in Costa Rica

By combining field analysis of tropical biodiversity and discussions of controversial issues in conservation biology, students will investigate the ecological and evolutionary causes of Costa Rica's high level of biodiversity. Participants will avail themselves of research facilities used by leading tropical biologists through hands-on projects in national parks, reserves, and rainforests.

Students in the Winter 2007 in Costa Rica program will take both BISC 440/ENWC 444 - Conservation of Tropical Biodiversity (3 credits) and ENWC 450 - Debates in Conservation Biology (3 credits). Honors credit may be available.

Winter in Hawaii

The combination of the early Polynesian settlers, military bases, and tourists has endowed Hawaii with a unique variety of plants, animals, and customs. Each of these groups have impacted the state's environment in different ways, and this program will investigate these interactions through lectures, projects, and excursions to beaches, volcanoes, museums, and other locations.

Students in the Winter 2007 in Hawaii program will take both BISC 107 - Elementary Evolutionary Ecology (3 credits) and BISC 127 - Environments and Cultures in Conflict (4 credits). Open to non-majors only. Honors credit may be available.
