General Publication Guidelines
- ACEI publications provide a professional medium for those concerned with the education and well-being of children from infancy through early adolescence, including:
- classroom teachers
- teachers-in-training
- teacher educators
- parents
- child care workers
- librarians
- supervisors
- administrators
- All proposals and manuscripts are subject to blind, peer review.
- References, should be consistent with the format, style and ethics of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (4th ed.).
- All submissions should be typewritten, double-spaced, and on one side of 8 1/2" x 11" paper.
- Publication or return of unsolicited material is not guaranteed.
- ACEI will hold the copyright to all published material.
- It is assumed that material is submitted exclusively to ACEI and will not be submitted elsewhere.
- ACEI reserves the right to edit, design, and illustrate accepted manuscripts.
- Authors receive no remuneration other than 5 complimentary copies of the publication.
- Articles and illustrations are considered a contribution to the profession.

. . . seeks to stimulate thinking, rather than advocate fixed practice, by exploring emerging ideas and conflicts supported with research.
Content
The Editor invites articles on innovative practices, research reviews, education statements, timely issues and international programs.
Submission
Submit 4 copies, with identification on only 1 copy. Keep length to
(1400-3500 words). Enclose a stamped, self-addressed

Review
Unsolicited manuscripts are anonymously reviewed. Reviewing takes
about 3 months.
Acceptance
Accepted material should be submitted on a 3.5" diskette (Microsoft Word 6.0 or ASCII/text only). Camera-ready figures and photos (color or black-and-white, with captions and credits) are encouraged. Model releases for photos must be obtained by the author. Photos and disks are returned.
Reviews in Childhood Education
CE reviews professional and children’s books, periodicals, films/videos and special publications. Contact the column editor (see Who's Who? at the end of these guidelines) if you are interested.
General Format for Reviews
- List the title, subtitle, author's full name, city of publication, publisher, copyright date, number of pages and price. For children's books, also include ISBN data and age range.
- Include your name, professional title, affiliation and location.
- Submit a hard copy and a computer disk within 2 months of assignment.

. . . brochures explain school practices to parents in clear terms. ACEI has published Understanding Portfolio Assessment, A Parent's Guide to Kindergarten, The Multiage Classroom, Understanding Whole Language, A Parent's Guide to Playground Safety, Homework, Inclusion, Understanding AD(H)D, Understanding How Children Learn to Read, What Parents Need to Know About Dyslexia, Safety in the Cybervillage, Worksheets in Preschool, Enjoying Humor With Your Child, Obesity and Children, and Multiple Intelligences.
Other topic ideas are welcome.
Content
- Keep the tone casual and as jargon-free as possible.
- Answer these questions: "Why are educators choosing this particular curricular method?" "What are its benefits?" "Why is this an improvement?" "Why is this topic important to me and how does it affect my child's education?" "What is my role?"
- Present the information briefly. Use short paragraphs and bulleted items.
- Inform parents how they can be involved.
Special Publications . . .
. . . are published each year by ACEI to describe desirable conditions, programs and practices for children; offer means for improving education professionalism; and focus on the rights of children and how they might be addressed.
Proposal Submission
- Rationale: Why is the publication important and timely? Relate the theme to current or emerging trends, developments, and theories.
- Scope and Sequence: Provide an outline that clearly defines the text's development and goals.
- Market Potential: To what audience is the publication directed? Describe the feasibility of other sales.
- Comparative Analysis: Compare and contrast your book with similar or related books. How is yours different, better, more complete?
- Manuscript Particulars: Establish a timeline for completion. Indicate the approximate number of pages, graphics, appendices and bibliographies.
- Sample Chapter: Enclose a completed chapter that is representative of your writing and organizational style.
- Vita: Enclose a vita that conveys your expertise and qualifications for the project.

Journal of Research in
Childhood Education . . .
. . . features articles that advance knowledge and theory of education.
Content
Consideration is given to empirical research reports, theoretical articles, ethnographic and case studies, participant observation studies and studies with data from natural settings. Cross-cultural studies and those addressing international concerns are also welcome.
Submission
Three copies (1 original and 2 high-quality machine copies) should be submitted to Kathleen Glascott Burriss, Journal of Research in Childhood Education Editor. To facilitate the blind review process, please limit all author identification to the title page.
Manuscripts should be 10-30 pages long, including the reference list. Provide a 100-200 word abstract.
Acceptance
Upon acceptance, camera-ready glossy prints of any graphics should be provided. All manuscripts will be acknowledged promptly. Articles judged to be of substantial importance to those concerned with the education of children and of the highest quality and ethical standards will be accepted for publication. The review process takes approximately 3 months.
