BAMS MINOR

      An undergraduate minor in Black American Studies is available for those students wishing to pursue related careers in this area. The program is designed to present a comprehensive study of the origins, conditions, and experiences of Black Americans using the perspectives and techniques of various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. It explores the social, political, and economic roots of contemporary problems, seeking to relate them to the major value systems in this country and the world.

      Students applying for the minor in Black American Studies must have completed at least one semester of full-time study at the University with a grade-point average of at least 2.1. The minor requires 18 credits, including BAMS 110, 304, 306, and two BAMS courses at or above the 300-level plus 1 elective BAMS courses. Advanced students who have shown the potential for doing research in a particular area may participate in independent study and special projects on an individual basis.

      Before a student may declare a minor in Black American Studies he/she must complete the Student Application Form, and obtain the approval of a faculty advisor and the program director. All students seeking to minor in Black American Studies must have completed at least one (1) semester of full-time study at the University with a grade point average of 2.5 or better. In addition, the student must also maintain a grade of "C" or better in all required courses.
