COURSE GRANTS - CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Black American Studies
2006-07 Course Development/Redesign
Grants Program in support of the Paul R. Jones Initiative

On behalf of the Paul R. Jones Initiative, the Black American Studies Program with the support of the Office of the Provost and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences invites University of Delaware faculty to apply for funding to support the redesign of an existing course or the development of a new course that will enhance the diversification of the University curriculum through a focus on Africa and its Diaspora (with emphasis on the United States). Successful applicants will be provided with up to $6,000 in course development funding and will be expected to share their work-in-progress in a faculty seminar series to be hosted by the museums of their respective institutions in 2006-07.

Preference will be given to faculty working on courses that are fully integrated into the home department's curriculum and that, in the University of Delaware, carry a cross-listing with Black American Studies. Preference will also be given to projects that make use of the University Museums' Paul R. Jones Collection, as well as to projects which support collaboration between University of Delaware faculty and faculty at Spelman College, North Carolina A&T University, and other institutions who are partnering in the utilization of the Paul R. Jones Collection and in support of the Paul R. Jones initiatives. Departmental endorsement is required, including a commitment to and a plan for offering the course at least three times between 2006-07 and 2010-11.

The following descriptions are examples of ways the Jones Collection has been incorporated into University of Delaware's curriculum. The examples are from grantees whom were awarded fiscal aid in developing courses that utilize the works of art in the Jones Collection. The diversity among the courses and their utilization of the art is evident in the descriptions:
