Flattening the Classroom:
Building Collaborative Learning Environments
September 23 and 24, afternoon sessions at various times
011 Smith Hall

On September 23-24, you are invited to join members of the LMS Committee and others in the UD community to discover the role that collaborative learning, facilitated by IT, can play in our classrooms. The event, “Flattening the Classroom: Building Collaborative Learning Environments,” is a two-day virtual focus session, organized by the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative.

Through a series of virtual presentations, lightning rounds, and discussion sessions, we’ll explore an approach to learning that engages students in the active construction of collective knowledge, empowering them to build meaning together and challenging them to examine issues from multiple perspectives. The event is designed to be interactive and participatory; our on-campus team will be watching the presentations as a group and then engaging in guided group discussion and reflection around the issues, helping us drive home the lessons learned and laying the groundwork for future classroom collaborations.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. and Thursday, September 24, from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Our campus team will be participating in room 011 of Smith Hall. Once registered, you can attend as long it as suits your schedule. Drop in for an hour or stay all afternoon. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided.

Register online to attend part or all of Wednesday afternoon or Thursday afternoon.

By participating with the team, you’ll have an opportunity to meet new colleagues, learn about projects already under way on campus, and begin building connections that will last beyond the event.

In this introductory session, we'll explore the use of Google Reader and Diigo as multi-faceted tools for starting an online personal network, managing the flow of information, and collaborating with others. You'll also plan how to include students in your network and help them develop these tools for lifelong learning.

Not sure what Outsider Art is? Have a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outsider_art   You will see that much of the description could be applied to any number of aspects of Second Life creations.   There is a large and diverse array of Outsider Art to be seen while traveling in Second Life. The very nature of creating in this space, and some of the definitions of the form, can put the artwork created here in the Outsider Art category.
