When you listen to jazz or other music without lyrics, do you ever ask yourself: What is it? How does the music communicate to me? Why am I drawn to listening? When and where did the feelings in the music begin? From where did these feelings emanate and where might they transport me? Music and other performing arts, like the visual arts, employ elemental vocabulary, structural organization, and an active mood endowment that can be encoded without words to provoke human thought and ply rich interpretation. This is the multi-sensory language of the visual arts. It is another form of expressive human communication. In all your Foundations courses, you will be encouraged to associate, intermingle, probe/practice, and join professionally to explore the vocabulary of the language that is visual ART.
