Homework Assignments

Homework #1: 50 thumbnails
DUE on Tuesday, Sept. 5 in class:
50 thumbnail sketches of your site from various vantage points on newsprint (other paper is okay). You should be able to fit about ten thumbnails on one 18x24in newsprint page. Thumbnails could be around 4x6in or so--you decide. LINE only.

Thumbnails are purposefully small and quick sketches--they're about the "big idea" and overall composition (as opposed to being object-oriented and literal). They are also a way for you to investigate and understand your site.

Five of your thumbnails will serve as the basis for the five drawings you submit for the Site Study project. Consider them preliminary studies of your site. Focus only on understanding the site for now (we will develop project ideas later).

See an example from Oldenburg's Spoonbridge and Cherry.
(A little more rough than what you should do, but the key is sketching to understand and record information.)

Thumbnails should show that you have fully explored the site--variety among your sketches is essential.

More than you want to know about thumbnail sketches here.

Homework #2: Boxy-object still lifes
DUE on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in class:
2 still-life drawings of primarily boxy objects--draw the same set up from two different eye levels (for example, one looking up, one looking down). On 18x24in paper, sketch pad or newsprint. LINE only.

Primary objective is to draw all objects relating correctly in space. Use correct linear perspective to help you.

See "linear perspective" page for rules of linear perspective and examples of student work.

Homework #3: Value drawings
DUE on Tuesday, Oct. 31 in class
