MEd Option in Secondary Science & Middle Level Math

Qualified ARTC candidates in Middle School Mathematics and Secondary Science (biology, chemistry, earth science and physics) may complete certification via the traditional ARTC program OR opt to apply to the University of Delaware's M.Ed. Program in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in either Mathematics Education or Secondary Science Education. Completion of the M.Ed. courses listed below will satisfy the requirements for ARTC certification; additional courses must be taken to earn the master's degree. Detailed information on additional M.Ed. program requirements can be found at http://www.udel.edu/educ/graduate/.

A maximum of 9 credits taken prior to admission into the graduate program may be applied, if appropriate, to the degree, so candidates electing this option should apply for admission as early as possible and before 9 course credits have been completed.

Candidates who choose this option must meet all criteria for ARTC enrollment, including employment in a Delaware public or charter secondary school and passing scores on Praxis I and Praxis II. They must also be provided the same supervision and mentoring as all other ARTC candidates and schools must submit the same documentation of successful classroom performance at the end of the internship year (3 lesson analyses, final performance appraisal and letter recommending certification) to complete certification through ARTC.

To qualify for this option, candidates must

  • hold a bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the selected program with an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher;
  • submit transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work;
  • submit a combined score of at least 1050 on the GRE verbal and quantitative tests;
  • provide three letters of recommendation testifying to the applicant's academic abilities;
  • submit a one or two page statement of the applicant's goals for the program and proposed specialization;
  • submit a one or two page statement of the applicant's goals for the program and proposed specialization;

The School of Education does not guarantee admission to those who meet these minimum academic requirements, but will consider candidates who fail to meet the requirements but who offer other strengths.
