Finding a Teaching Job

ARTC teachers must be hired by a Delaware public or charter secondary school BEFORE enrolling in ARTC.

There is no single listing of all teaching positions open in the state, but there are several ways to look for a teaching position:

  • Watch the newspaper and apply for job openings in your subject area.
  • Determine which districts or charters are within a reasonable commuting distance from your home, and regularly check their websites for job postings. THIS IS YOUR MOST RELIABLE SOURCE!
  • Find out how the personnel offices of school districts in your area handle job applications. For example, some may only want a resume (and sometimes only in electronic format) until an actual position becomes available, while others may want an application on file before they will consider you for a specific job opening.
  • Visit Teach Delaware to check job openings and post an on-line application to be seen by all Delaware schools. Note that this site will include only a small number of the positions that are actually available, but districts will check it to find candidates for especially hard-to-fill jobs.
  • Use the request form available at this site to provide the ARTC office with contact information. If you indicate that the information you provide can be shared with schools, we will add you to our database of potential candidates to share with schools and districts, and e-mail your contact information to personnel offices.
  • Check our homepage for upcoming teacher job fairs.
  • Reorganize your resume to highlight any experience you have had with children, with teaching or training, or with extracurricular offerings like sports or yearbook. If you have them, include Praxis I and II scores.
  • Be sure to note on your resume and district applications that you are eligible for an emergency certificate through ARTC and in what subjects. You may use the email confirming ARTC eligibility with your application.

Other strategies?

  • If you have a particular school in mind, make an appointment to introduce yourself to the vice principal or department chair in your subject area.
  • If you are able, sign on as a sub! There is a very high need for substitute teachers and this can be an excellent way to develop classroom skills and become known to school personnel.
