“The Tug of War.”
Full View. 2003 Audio/Video, Rope, Motor, Surveillance Cameras. 12’x20’x6’ Cut into the walls of the gallery and placed motor with off-center pin in one side and a spring in the other, ran video and audio cables inside wall to a closet on the other side of the room. Wired audio to small speakers that were sealed inside the wall so that sound comes from inside. Video comes out of the bottom of the wall. Surveillance cameras are mounted above in a position to see into the wall. The rope is attached to the motor and spring and moves in and out of the two holes in the wall. On the Monitor you see what looks to be a surveillance image in sync with the angle of the cameras of me playing tug of war against myself. Both characters are winning but both end up drowning in the rope that piles up inside the space as they pull it in. Each character has an absurd dialogue, coming from inside the wall, where they talk about wanting what the other has. |
