FAQs

Q: I am currently majoring in something other than Art at the University of Delaware and I am interested in transferring into the Fine Arts degree program. Can you tell me how to do this?

A: The BFA in Fine Arts degree program is a 3-year program of study within the Art and Design Department that follows 1 year of Foundation Art. Application to the Fine Arts program requires that a student has successfully completed the credit requirements of Foundation Art. These required courses are listed at: http://www.udel.edu/art/undergrad/foundations/overview.htm To transfer into the Art and Design Department as a Freshman, first contact the department chairperson and inform them of your intentions. You will need to submit a portfolio with all applicants according to the guidelines on the Portfolio Website.

Q: I am currently majoring in something other than Art at the University of Delaware and I am interested in transferring into the Visual Communications degree program. Can you tell me how to do this?

A: The BFA in Visual Communications degree program is a 3-year program of study within the Art and Design Department that follows 1 year of Foundation Art. Application to the VC program requires that a student has successfully completed the credit requirements of Foundation Art. These required courses are listed at: http://www.udel.edu/art/undergrad/foundations/overview.htm

Q: I'm a freshman here at Delaware and I would really like to switch to visual communications interest.

A: The term "Visual Communications Interest" is no longer relevant in the Art and Design Department. All degree programs (BFA in VC and Fine Art) require the successful completion of Foundation Art courses. Therefore, it is suggested that you apply to the Art and Design Department according to the process described on the digital Portfolio Application website: http://portfolio.art.udel.edu and upon acceptance, enroll in Foundation Art courses in preparation for applying to the BFA in Visual Communications degree program.

Q: I intend to transfer into the Art and Design Department (or switch majors) in the Spring to begin as an Art major in the Fall semester. In preparation, can I take Art courses at the University of Delaware that will count toward my major requirements?

A: All undergraduate majors offered by the University of Delaware have specific required Art courses that are only offered during either the Fall or Spring semesters. It is possible that you could take some Art Electives, but you are not able to enroll in the required major courses until you are an Art major.

Q: I plan to transfer into the Art and Design Department, will my Art courses taken at another school transfer as Art courses at the University of Delaware?

A: Occasionally credits taken at another school will transfer as Freshman Foundation Art courses, but this is at the discretion of the Art and Design Department Chairperson. It is extremely rare that courses taken at other schools will transfer in place of upper-level degree-specific UD/ART courses.

Q: Can I major in Advertising in the Visual Communication department?

A: "Visual Communications" is a degree program within the Art and Design Department, it is not a department unto itself. Additionally, the VC program does not offer discipline-specific degrees like "Advertising", rather the degree requirements introduce you to a variety of disciplines in your education as an applied artist. The degree is "BFA in Visual Communications".
