Frequently Asked Questions

Will I always need to come to the UD campus in Newark in order to take advantage of UD's excellent educational opportunities?

No. Many courses and a growing number of degree programs are available in distance format (web, DVD). When there is sufficient interest, courses may be arranged at your worksite. We find that most people pursuing graduate studies on a part-time basis like a combination of formats: on-campus courses allow interaction with faculty and full-time graduate students plus access to outstanding laboratory space for research opportunities; distance format (web/DVD) and courses offered at the worksite increase flexibility in scheduling.

What graduate degree programs are available at UD?

UD currently offers 43 doctoral and 115 master's degree programs across its seven colleges and more than 50 research centers and institutes. Many of these programs are regarded among the very best in the nation.

If I'm looking for a particular degree area but can't find it on the UD list, is it possible that UD is still the right place for me?

Absolutely. We are constantly innovating and creating - and may already have what you're seeking. For example, a new MS in Software Engineering is in the final approval stages - but you can actually begin taking courses now that will count toward it. Other certificate and degree programs are in the design stages and we welcome your input!

Is it possible to pursue an engineering and business administration master's degrees simultaneously?

Yes. In collaboration with the Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics, the College of Engineering is pleased to offer students the opportunity to simultaneously complete both a master's degree in any of the engineering disciplines plus a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.

Can I just take individual graduate engineering courses without being admitted to a graduate degree program?

Yes. Engineering Outreach offers a variety of non-credit short courses, and will design courses to meet the needs suggested by industry, government - or YOU!

Does UD offer review courses to help me prepare for the Fundamentals of Engineering and/or Professional Engineering licensing exams?

Yes. UD has produced a taped review for the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination, the first of a two-part examination procedure leading to registration as a professional engineer. This distance-format review course also benefits those seeking a general review of engineering fundamentals and an introduction to other engineering fields.

Professional Engineering review courses are offered twice a year, corresponding to the spring and fall exams, by UD engineering faculty and engineers from industry. These review courses (19 sessions each) are designed to help the engineer prepare for the Principles and Practices of Engineering Examination, to provide a general refresher in a given field, and to present an introduction to other engineering fields.

Do such certificate programs exist in any areas of engineering?

Yes. There are currently graduate certificate programs in composite materials, with a wind power engineering certificate in the approval stage, and other certificates being designed in areas such as software engineering, systems engineering, and engineering management.

Can I earn any UD undergraduate degrees in the evening or online?

Yes, through the Division of Professional & Continuing Studies.

What concentrated non-engineering certificate programs are available?

UD's Professional and Continuing Studies offers programs in business, management, finance, project management and many more.

What criteria must I meet in order for my family and me to be considered a "Delaware resident" for tuition purposes?

Delaware in-state tuition privileges for undergraduate education will be extended immediately to all military, civilian and contractor personnel who are assigned to Aberdeen Proving Ground as a result of the BRAC, relocating on or before September 15, 2011, and choosing to reside in Delaware. The University will waive the residency requirement for in-state graduation tuition through Spring 2010. From 2010 forward, there is no residency requirement for graduate tuition.
