Examinations

All students in the Ph.D. Program in American Civilization are expected to pass the following examinations:

  • The major qualifying examinations in US history. Students in the American Civilization Program will answer three questions on U.S. colonial, nineteenth, and twentieth century history. These questions are administered by the Department's examination committee. Students will also answer a question prepared and administered by two members of the American Civilization Steering Committee on material culture.
  • A minor field examination.
  • A language examination. Students in the program must demonstrate competence in one foreign language according to the same standards that apply to other American history graduate students.

Upon passing these qualifying and language examinations, students enter into candidacy for the Doctoral Degree and select a Dissertation Director. No later than 6 months after entering doctoral candidacy, students must submit a written dissertation prospectus to their dissertation director and prepare for an oral examination relevant to the prospectus. Within six months of passing the prospectus defense, each student will present preliminary findings to the department as do other history department doctoral candidates. Upon completion of the dissertation, students defend it before their dissertation committee.
