Program History
The program was created in 1979 to take advantage of the faculty and cultural resources at the University and the Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library. The program was to be a small but competitive program within the larger graduate program in history. It was distinctive because of its interdisciplinary focus on American artistic, cultural, economic, intellectual, literary and social history and especially its commitment to the study of material culture. Over the past two decades its graduates have gone on to distinguished careers in college and university teaching and in museum and preservation work.
